About the coffee
Cooperative Umuco W’ikawa
Umuco W’ikawa means “the light of coffee” – because the farmers here have the feeling that coffee is a directional light for them that gives them direction and meaning.
This ambitious cooperative has big plans, and not just for developing its own community. They are already supported by local government officials working to strengthen the burundian coffee industry as a whole to help create a sustainable source of income for people across the country. The farmers in the Kayanza area covered 20 km, 4 hours on foot, to sell their coffee. Now there are collection points in the cooperative and all the money from the sale goes directly to the farmers. Your goal is to increase productivity, understand the value chain and improve coffee quality.
